Atlanta, Ga. — The Kingspan KoolDuct System meets the phenolic duct standards highlighted in the new chapter on duct construction in the 2016 ASHRAE Handbook — HVAC Systems and Equipment. The inclusion of phenolic duct standards into the handbook is a direct result of the growing recognition the solution has received through successfully completed projects within the building services / HVAC marketplace.

Gavin Hunter, commercial sales manager for Kingspan, assisted the ASHRAE Technical Committee members with the new addition of phenolic duct standard. “The committee’s changes are in direct response to the growing market of pre-insulated ductwork,” said Hunter. “This information is useful in helping system designers and operators when both selecting and using the best duct equipment for a job.”

The 2016 handbook’s Phenolic Ducts section notes, “A phenolic duct system is comprised of phenolic panels, fabrication methods, coupling systems and accessories that produce pre-insulated rectangular ductwork in sections up to 13 feet long. Phenolic ducts must be UL Class1 and meet the requirements of UL Standard 181 for rigid air ducts. Phenolic panels should be comprised of a fiber-free rigid thermoset phenolic insulation core faced with silver aluminum foil on one side and plain silver aluminum foil on the other.”

The Kingspan KoolDuct System is a phenolic duct system consisting of advanced and innovative pre-insulated HVAC ductwork which offers benefits such as reduced installation time, low weight, space savings through flush-to-ceiling installation, increased performance performance and energy efficiency. Ductwork fabricated from the Kingspan KoolDuct System can be installed indoors, outdoors and concealed above false ceilings and below raised floors. The Kingspan KoolDuct System is UL 181 listed as a Class 1 Air Duct and can easily attain a SMACNA Class 3 air leakage rating.

The Kingspan KoolDuct System comprises premium-performance panels, fabrication methods, coupling systems and a complete line of accessories to produce pre-insulated rectangular ductwork in sections up to 13 feet (3.93 meters) long for faster installation. KoolDuct weighs up to 72 percent less than ductwork constructed from galvanized sheet metal and insulated with mineral fiber insulation. It also saves six to eight inches in a single dimension and can be installed flush to the ceiling.

Kingspan KoolDuct panels are manufactured with a blowing agent that has zero ozone depletion potential and low global warming potential. The fiber-free, rigid phenolic insulation core minimizes the risk of loose fibers entering the airstream through the ductwork, since distributed air does not come into contact with insulation material that produces loose fibers.

The Kingspan KoolDuct System is designed for use in HVAC applications. It is suitable for both new build and retrofit projects in the residential, commercial, institutional, light industrial and leisure sectors. It is especially suitable for specification projects where non–fibrous insulants may be preferred, for instance the food, beverage and pharmaceutical industries; clean air and hygiene controlled environments; high relative humidity environments; sterile areas of hospitals and communication/server rooms in data centers.
