In The Beginning...

No pathway or accessibility
Traditionally, access floors were limited in where they could be applied depending on what finish you wanted to use in any particular area. With the main options being either carpet...or carpet (with an occassional HPL tile thrown in here and there) an access floor simply wouldn't be used in any part of a building that required something more. Instead,  a concrete slab would be poured and third party hard surface finishes (such as porcelain or wood) would be laminated to the slab. 

This allowed architects and interior designers to capture the look their clients wanted in every part of the building, but obviously wasn't the ideal solution. In addition to eliminating the pathway for underfloor service distribution and the accessibility provided by an access floor, the hard surfaces also had to be installed in the field, which often resulted in longer construction timelines and additional costs from bringing more trades on site to work.

The Evolution Begins

Eventually, the concrete slab was removed and access flooring was being utilized in every area throughout a project. But the need for higher-end hard surface finishes in certain areas remained, and so a new solution was used. An underlayment would be put down over top of the access floor panels, and then the hard surface finish would be laminated to that. This allowed a pathway to be created and extended throughout the entire building, but severely limited the ability to access or configure the spaces where underlayment was used without considerable work.
 

Modern Finishes Arrive

Today, everything has changed for the better. Tate now offers a continually expanding range of hard finishes from our newest, the STONEWORKS™ line of integrated finishes (which included Classic and Decorative concrete, Terrazzo, and two products which emulate the natural stone looks and feels of Granite and Slate), to other laminated options like porcelain, wood, and resilient soft tiles.

This range of options means that it's easier than ever before for architects and designers to capture the look their clients want, without having to sacrifice any of the benefits that are traditionally provided by an access floor. And, since all of Tate's finishes ship from our manufacturing facility as a finished product, they arrive to job sites ready for installtion - potentially saving time and money, while providing for a higher quality end result than can normally be achieved when working in the field.
