AIA Courses

Each of our AIA Continuing Education Units (CEUs) last no longer than 60 minutes, meaning they are perfect to fit in around lunchtime. Each session has a specific focus ranging from design flexibility, building envelope performance, roof safety, fire and sustainability. Our comprehensive technical CE program is designed to provide a deepened understanding of building with Kingspan daylighting and lighting systems, smoke management sytems and natural ventilation, typical specification issues and how we can help to provide a solution to overcome them. Program topics such as effective daylight design, and achieving Net Zero Energy (NZE) ready buildings.

Translucent Daylighting Facade Systems

Credits: 1.25 hours for AIA LU/HSW, 1 hour for GBCI (additional credits available)

In this course, discover why the integration of daylighting into your design is so important, and how it contributes to a better indoor environment. We will discuss how translucent daylighting systems offer better glare control, higher thermal performance, and easier maintenance compared to clear glass systems, and review the benefits of incorporating successful daylighting systems into the building’s design. This course will also explore the ways that daylighting systems can contribute to innovative, high-performance buildings that are fully code-compliant, green, and sustainable.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify and recognize the green building characteristics of translucent building envelope systems using high-performance, multi-pane insulated panels.

  • Investigate the design potential and innovative opportunities to create buildings that use translucent facades for natural daylighting and energy-use optimization.

  • Assess the multiple ways that translucent building envelopes and glazing systems contribute to green and sustainable design.

This 1.5-hour course provides an overview of the benefits and applications of successful daylighting systems, with a focus on the characteristics of high-performance translucent technologies, including removable glazing/skin options and two-panel systems. We will also discuss strict code requirements with daylighting technology.

Building and Energy Code Compliance for Translucent Daylighting Design Solutions

Credits: 1 hour for AIA HSW, 1 hour for GBCI

In this 1-hour course, discover why the integration of daylighting into your design is so important, and how it contributes to a better indoor environment. We will review translucent technologies and address testing and standards for glazing systems as well.

Learning Objectives:

  • Discuss the key characteristics of both successful and unsuccessful daylighting strategies, and review the benefits associated with implementing successful daylighting systems.

  • Describe key characteristics of high-performance daylighting systems and how they differ from low-performance systems.

  • Explain why translucent double-panel systems with removable exterior glazing are ideal for successful daylighting designs.

  • Review the various code requirements and their impact on the daylighting industry, including how they have influenced the evolution of daylighting systems.

Dynamic Daylighting and Sun Control Systems

Credits: 1 hour for AIA HSW, 1 hour for GBCI

This 1-hour course provides an overview of the benefits and applications of successful dynamic daylighting systems, with a focus on the characteristics of high-performance translucent technologies.

Learning Objectives:

  • Explain the design dilemma between introducing natural daylight and shading out unwanted solar heat and glare.

  • Explain the dynamic daylighting strategy to design larger apertures with built-in shading technology.

  • Describe the primary components of solar blade technology for a dynamic daylighting glazing panel.

  • Discuss the features of an intelligent, dynamic daylighting system and how they have been incorporated into projects to solve design challenges.

  • Explain how to maximize credits for your LEED project by incorporating dynamic daylighting systems.
