Climate change is the single most important issue facing the world today. To protect our planet, we need to prevent a 1.5 rise in global temperatures this century. To do this, carbon emissions need to be cut to net zero globally by 2050 but we are currently on course to miss this goal substantially. We are also facing an unprecedented threat to our natural world, with 1 million species at risk in a planet where 2 billion tons of waste is generated annually.
Our Planet Passionate sustainability program will span a decade. Some of the key highlights of 2021 were: a 4.3% reduction in our scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions for our underlying business, increasing the percentage of our wholly owned sites with rooftop solar PV installations to 28.4%, the completion of 6 rainwater harvesting projects, the installation of 33 electric vehicle charging stations and recycling 843m PET bottles into our processes.
Planet Passionate is our new 10-year groupwide global sustainability strategy which aims to impact on three big global issues: climate change, circularity and protection of our natural world.
In 2011 through our Net Zero Energy program, Kingspan committed globally to matching 100% operational energy with renewable energy by 2020. We are on track to achieve this target through a three pronged approach of Save More, Generate More and Buy More.
