Kingspan Announces New Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) for QuadCore Technology

Kingspan is proud to announce that our QuadCore technology has received an EPD certification from SCS Global Services, an international leader in third-party certification and standards development in environmental, sustainability, food safety and quality performance claims.

Additionally, our other PIR and laminate panel products have also been issued newly-released EPDs though SCS Global Services.

An Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) is a comprehensive, internationally-harmonized and independently verified report that documents the ways in which a product, throughout its lifecycle, affects the environment.

An EPD tells the life cycle story of a product in a single, written report, focusing on information about a product’s environmental impacts, such as global warming potential (GWP), smog creation, ozone depletion potential (ODP), and water pollution. An EPD can also include other product impacts such as land use changes, potential toxicity risks, as well as corporate environmental initiatives that are of particular interest to the discloser.

EPDs do not rank products, and the existence of an EPD for a product does not indicate that environmental performance criteria have been met. Rather, EPDs are a disclosure tool that helps purchasers better understand a product’s sustainable qualities and environmental repercussions so they can make more informed product selections.

Why has there been so much focus recently around Embodied Carbon and how do EPDs fit in?

The building industry and building owners are increasingly becoming aware that materials matter and are seeking ways to evaluate the emissions associated with making these materials. Embodied carbon will be responsible for almost half of total new construction emissions between now and 2050.

Until now, we have not had a reliable or efficient way to compare these emissions utilizing the data contained in an EPD. The open-source Embodied Carbon in Construction Calculator (EC3) tool simplifies this complex problem, giving users the information they need to make more informed decisions on embodied carbon, allowing them to enact positive change. Details on the EC3 tool will be made available November 2019. Collaborating partners will be demonstrating the product at Greenbuild, November 19-22, 2019 at the Georgia World Congress Center, Atlanta, GA.

Kingspan Insulated Panels North America created the first-of-its-kind cradle-to-grave UL Certified ISO compliant EPD in September of 2011.  Since that time, Kingspan has issued multiple revisions to our certifications, documenting our journey of continuous improvement.

Kingspan is devoted to the future of our planet, and this planet-passionate attitude permeates every product we release.  We are very proud of our QuadCore EPD, as well as the myriad of other certifications our products carry.

QuadCore’s other third-party certifications include GREENGUARD Gold and a Silver Level Material Health Certificate, earned through the rigorous Cradle to Cradle assessment. In addition, QuadCore is Red List Free, so it can contribute to credits in health and wellness certifications, such as WELL, the Living Building Challenge, LEED v4 and BREEAM.
