Today is a day of celebration here at Kingspan because we’re proud to announce that Kingspan Group PLC retained our position on the CDP Climate ‘A List’ for the third consecutive year. If you’re not familiar with CDP, it is an international non-profit that encourages companies and governments to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions, safeguard water resources and protect forests.

This year, we’ve been recognized as one of 160 corporates – among the 114 companies on the climate change A-list – that are making positive strides toward cutting greenhouse gas emissions, along with companies like Apple, Microsoft and Toyota. We’ve continued to be a leader in climate action as we’re paving the way to a low carbon future.

We’ve been working hard to cut emissions, mitigate climate risks and develop the low-carbon economy. Last year we passed the halfway mark on our journey toward achieving Net Zero Energy (NZE) by 2020. In the past five years, our products have helped our customers reduce their annual energy consumption by over 600 million megawatt hours – that’s the equivalent to over 372 million barrels of oil!

How have we earned a place on this list? We can attribute it to our three-pronged approach:

1. Save more energy

Energy efficiency measures that we have introduced have reduced the company’s overall lighting and heat costs by over 30% and achieved almost a four-fold decrease in carbon intensity levels.

2. Generate more renewable energy

We’re committed to using renewable energy here at Kingspan. Our on-site renewable energy generation has jumped from 6.6 GWh in 2012 to 32.2 GWh in 2016 using solar, wind and biomass technologies.

3. Buy more renewable energy

We’ve taken steps to ensure that where renewable energy can’t be produced on-site, it is procured from fully-certified sources. The final step in our process is to procure energy from renewable sources as we journey to achieving 100% Net Zero Energy.

Unless more action is taken by corporations, the United Nations Energy Program (UNEP) predicts that greenhouse gas emissions are set to double over the next 20 years. Check back for our next blog where we’ll further discuss Net Zero Energy and our commitment to getting there by 2020.
