Kingspan Joins the Paris Solutions Campaign

June 1st marked the one-year anniversary of the U.S. backing out of the Paris Climate Accord – the only country in the world to do so.

On September 13th, Hurricane Florence made landfall in North Carolina forcing my family to evacuate Charleston, South Carolina, for the first time in 14 years. The massive system threatened to grow to a Category 5, which would have had winds of 156 mph or more. No storm in recorded history had ever done that so far north, so close to South Carolina.

After landfall, it moved inland to the southwest, a direction that no hurricane expert had ever seen before. Florence — a frightening storm larger than the Carolinas combined — was nothing if not unpredictable.

If you are on the fence as to the impacts climate change most definitely will have on our society, you may be surprised to learn how many states and cities are taking action and creating their own policies to reduce climate pollution.

Businesses are also committing to take steps in support of the Paris Accord. Kingspan is proud to be a founding member of the International Living Future Institute’s Paris Solutions Campaign. Join us – Action now is no longer optional, but imperative.

The rate of growth of zero energy and zero carbon buildings would need to accelerate six-fold for the world to meet its climate targets; an order of magnitude greater than the aggressive commitments many nations, corporations, and governments have already made.

The ILFI has set out to champion a Zero Energy future with an invitation to join a collective action to radically accelerate actions to meet the Paris Climate Accord.  The focus of Paris Solutions is on far-reaching, verified, assertive action to ensuring words are backed by real results. Those actions result in a more sustainable society, environment, and culture than occurred during the fossil fuel driven industrial era. Simply put the campaign is a:

  • A cohort of leading organizations across the built environment
from owners and developers to designers, contractors, and product
manufacturers who share aggressive climate goals in alignment
with the 2015 Paris Agreement
  • A platform for participants to share best practices, and accelerate
climate action within their organizations
  • A campaign to leverage the collective expertise of the participants
to scale climate action across industries

The organizations involved in the Paris Solutions Campaign are “leaders of leaders”—companies, governments, and NGO’s that are deeply committed to the radical change need to create a thriving world that doesn’t use fossil fuels.  In twenty years, our hope is the Paris Solutions Campaign will be seen as one of the key leadership efforts that helped turn the tide on climate change. In addition to Kingspan, other companies in the Campaign include:

  • Alexandria Real Estate
  • Arup
  • District of Columbia
  • HOK
  • Integral Group
  • ILFI
  • McLennan Design
  • NRDC
  • Perkins + Will
  • Phipps Conservatory
  • Salesforce
  • Skanska

The members will focus on a collective strategy that will be publicly announced later this year.

While the federal government abandoning the accord has been a major disappointment, it has served to motivate other countries, cities and corporations to increase their efforts to fight the effects of climate change.
