Aanekosken Fire Station

Kingspan Facades Evolution panels have been used in the facade of the Äänekoski fire station. A new home for firefighters was inaugurated in September 2019.

The Project

The functionality of the old fire station facilities was no longer adequate to meet today's needs, and the main goal was to adjust the space to the Clean Fire Station concept, meaning that all exposure to flue gases and smoke will be left in the washroom immediately and will not spread around the station. The design of the new Äänekoski fire station started off as a refurbishment project, but became more of a new project due to completely new idea of building. Evolution panels have been used in the facade cladding enabling more flexibility at the design stage.

Äänekoski, Finland
Evolution System
We chose this new material because it has good thermal insulation and is resistant to all weather conditions. The metal surface element structure is simple and does not absorb moisture, is fire safe and is fully recyclable

Technical  Expertise

Some challenges on this project included the creation of a number of bespoke ancillaries, including vertical rails for the hook-on cassettes, factory-cranked corner cassettes to give a smoother look, flashings made to match the thickness of the cassettes at strategic reveal points, and a penetrating steel fixing solution for store signage.

Minimal Energy Required

With minimal junctions and reduced air leakage, it was easier to achieve the desired BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating, all while allowing for maximum design flexibility.
