The Project

On the 20th anniversary of the company’s presence in Ireland, Pilz decided to cement its position as a global provider of automation products, systems and services and its commitment to Cork with the development of a new custom-built development site. Created to be a global centre of excellence, the three-storey facility has doubled the capacity of the overall Pilz campus, allowing it to expand its current portfolio of automation systems and develop new technologies around Internet of Things (IoT), analytics and new Software as a Service (SaaS) applications.

High-Performance Aesthetics

Horizontally-laid Evolution Recess panels were used on the majority of the elevations. The folded panel ends and gaskets between each panel add depth and dimension redolent of industrial concrete blocks. Meanwhile, their sleek profile and hidden fixings create a contemporary, minimalist edge that complements the large glazing areas on the project and is befitting of the ground-breaking work that will take place inside the building.  This overall clean effect was maintained at the edge joints of the facade with aluminium corner details.

All the products used on the project were selected in a monotone palette of Kingspan Spectrum Greyrock, adding a further sense of weight to the facade. The coating’s excellent UV and corrosion resistance will ensure the colour retains its depth and intensity over time, providing a striking contrast with the bright yellow fins on the glazing elements.
Pilz is committed to remaining at the forefront of innovation, and this new centre at our Irish operation showcases that vision. Coupled with the milestone of 20 years of Pilz in Ireland, this project marks a new step for the company in Cork as we scale and grow, futureproofing the company as it develops its next generation intelligent software.

The untextured and unprofiled Evolution panels, helped to create the simple facade we were trying to achieve. The folded panel ends added a sense of depth to each panel which, combined with the clean lines achieved by the corner fabrications, produced a high-quality aesthetic suitable for the project’s function.

Industrial Revolution

Evolution Panelised Facade on Pilz, Ireland
The completed centre is an impressive marker of Pilz’s success in Ireland and its ground-breaking contribution to the future role of automation. Its sharp, clean and striking design has received considerable professional praise in the industry, winning Industrial Project of the Year at the Irish Construction Industry Awards 2018 and ‘Best Development’ Award at Building & Architect of the Year Awards 2018

Systematic Efficiency

The single component installation of the Evolution panels helped to establish a quick and effective building approach on the project. Starting at the corners, they were simply fixed horizontally to the supporting steel work and finished with secret-fix corners to create an enclosed envelope, allowing internal trades to begin work.
The strong technical relationship between our design team, the contractors and the Kingspan Technical Team allowed us to optimise the specification and ensure all aspects were delivered in line with the design intent.
