  1. If you have to renovate it is worth your while to consider energy upgrade measures these will save you money in the long term as well as cosmetic renovations.
  2. Study your new renovation project carefully as this is going to be your home: does it work for you? Is the layout right? Consider comfort and facilities that suit your lifestyle.
  3. Adapt your home to meet your needs. Some small changes can make a huge difference. For example, minimizing draughts around the house with weather strips around windows and doors.
  4. Did you know that many older houses do not have insulation? To create a comfortable home you should consider insulating wall and roof or attic spaces.
  5. Can you service your older boiler or does it need to be replaced? Evaluate existing central heating systems, is it efficient enough for the property if not consider upgrading. Would remote access to your heating system through an app on your phone be helpful for you lifestyle?
  6. Sealing joints between floor boards or using a very good underlay can help with unwelcome draughts.
  7. Evaluate the amount of light within the house based on the direction your home facing. Can you bring more light into rooms by cosmetic improvements such as light paint on walls or do you need to change window openings or add skylights?
  8. Be aware of any help that is available and how you can avail of it such as SEAI grants and the government home renovation scheme.
