The Project

The Queens University Belfast Centre for Experimental Medicine is an interdisciplinary research centre housed in The Wellcome-Wolfson Institute for Experimental Medicine. The Queens University Belfast Centre for Medical Education is committed to constantly improving its environmental performance and sustainability. The centre is expected to attract some of the best researchers from across the world.

O’Hare & McGovern was the main contractor for this purpose built building which is spread across two blocks of four floors and has an area of almost 7,300m². These two blocks are joined by a number of internal walkways in order to facilitate collaboration between research groups in both buildings. The building designed by Ostik & Williams Architects, allows for areas within the building to be adapted to suit the different requirements of each research group. Along with this space, the building also houses principle investigator offices, research staff write-up areas, large labs complete with an array of lab equipment and support spaces.
Kingspan Kooltherm K8 premium performance rigid thermoset insulation was used as partial fill cavity wall insulation and was specified as a 80mm Kooltherm K8 to meet the projects requirements as it achieves an excellent U-value without increasing the overall cavity width.

Adding to the buildings thermal credentials, Kingspan Kooltherm K10 100m Soffit Board was used on the soffits and semi exposed floor slabs which has thermal conductivities as low as 0.020 W/m.K. The Kingspan Thermafloor TF70 board was used throughout the building on the solid concreate and on the suspended ground floors in 50mm, while 25mm vertical strips were used along the exposed perimeter to minimise cold bridging. Thermafloor TF70 is made of non-deleterious material and is unaffected by air infiltration making it a great solution for this project.

Also fitted in this development was Kooltherm K12 70mm Framing Board to insulate between the buildings framing system. This phenolic insulation is faced on both sides with a low emissivity composite foil and is ideal for both new build and refurbishments.

Styrozone N300 has a smooth, dense skin on both faces and was used throughout this project. This heavy duty, high performance rigid extruded polystyrene insulant was used in 5 sizes; 50mm, 60mm, 80mm, 120mm and 140mm. Kingspan Styrozone N300 has a compressive strength of 300 kPa at 10% compression when tested to EN 826:1996. This product can be used in heavy duty floors, inverted roofs and basement walls. 
Kooltherm K3 Floorboard was used in 25mm x 150mm strips. This premium performance rigid thermoset insulation has a thermal conductivities as low as 0.020 W/m.K and provides a minimum compressive strength of 120 kPa at 10% compression.

Kingspan Kooltherm Cavity Closure 150mm was used on the project and is a perfect soloution to alleviate thermal bridging and ensuring there is a continuous high performance insulation maintained around windows and door openings.

Built with the University’s commitment to sustainability in mind, the £32m building was designed to minimize its impact on the environment and with the aim to achieve the goal of Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM) "Excellent". It is expected to attract the best researchers from around the world
