Derry House

Designed by Tracey Architects, this property located in Derry is a very impressive energy efficient structure. Constructed by the Kevin Watson Group, this project used a range of Kingspan products and availed of Kingspan Insulations new Premium Plus Service.

The Project

This service is designed for homes achieving ≤0.13W/m².K area weighted average U-value and using Kingspan’s Kooltherm product in three or more applications. This service has been designed to meet the needs of all new builds and carries many benefits including; pre-design assessment of details, a consultation service along with five site inspection visits, which are undertaken to advise each critical stage of product installation. Ultimately reassuring the architect that their specification is followed and providing additional peace of mind for the homeowner in the quality of the product installation.

Kingspan’s Kooltherm K8 160mm Partial Fill Cavity Wall Insulation (supplied in a single board) was used in the cavity wall. This substantial board was used in the construction of this low energy house as it provides a superior low U-value of 0.11W/m².K, almost a third of that required by the minimum limiting standards in accordance with Part F, and is faced on both sides with a low emissivity composite foil. This reflective, low emissivity surface improves the thermal resistance of any unventilated cavity adjacent to the board. 

This property was equipped with Kooltherm K3 Floor Insulation. Kingspan’s Kooltherm K3 is suitable for both solid and suspended concrete floors and suspended timber floors. This floor insulation offers a thermal conductivity as low as 0.020 W/m.K and a class 0 fire rated insulation core. The compressive strength of Kingspan Kooltherm K3 Floorboard typically exceeds 120 kPa at 10% compression when tested to BS/ I.S EN 826: 1996.

Kingspan Styrozone Heavy Duty Floor Insulation was used on the outside of the exterior walls below ground level and below the pool area in the basement. This high performance rigid extruded polystyrene insulation has a high compressive strength and thermal conductivity as low as 0.029W/m.K. Unaffected by air infiltration and resistant to ground moisture penetration, solvents, fungi and rodents, this product was the perfect solution for beneath the pool area.

Metdeck warm roof decking board was specified by the architects for the roof. Metdeck combines the superior thermal performance of Kingspan’s Kooltherm Insulation board with an FSC certified WBP exterior grade plywood to provide a continuous supporting substrate for the application of long strip metal roofing, plus ensuring faster fixing times. The upper facing of Metdeck is 18mm WBP exterior grade plywood and the lower facing of Metdeck is a low emissivity composite foil which is highly resistant to the transmission of water vapour. Not only does Metdeck deliver superior thermal performance, it is also easy to fit and install. 

For the flat roof areas of this house Kingspan’s Warm Flat Roofing system was used. The flat roof areas consisted of a PVC membrane bonded with Kingspan Thermaroof TR27 LPC/FM, a vapour control layer and a concrete slab. Lack of space was an issue in the internal valley gutter area so they used Kingspan’s Optim-R insulation under a liquid membrane roofing system, this is the perfect solution for areas where space is limited.

This private property which availed of Kingspan’s Premium Plus Service offering, is an excellent example of modern architecture working at its best.
