Inchicore National School

The Model School Inchicore

The Model School Inchicore is a conservation of and addition to a historic Irish primary school in order to adapt the school to modern day requirements.

The Project

Designed by Donaghy + Dimond Architects and ‘Best Educational’ Winner at the Irish Architecture Awards, The Model School Inchicore is a conservation of and addition to a historic Irish primary school in order to adapt the school to modern day requirements. Built in Inchicore in 1853 to serve the rising population in the local area The Model School, also known as Inchicore National School, is one of the oldest schools in Ireland.
In September 2001 the boys and girls schools amalgamated which then led to the creation of a building programme to relieve pressure for space in the old structure. Amongst chestnut trees in a back corner of the yard a brand new building was constructed. The extension is accessible from the street via a newly built entrance. The €1.5m project consists of the refurbishment of the old school plus a new building with a general-purpose area which partly cuts into the yard. It also houses both home-school liaison and new staff facilities, plus six new classrooms which have amazing views into the tree canopy, whilst still maximizing space in the playground area. Both old and new buildings share a south-facing entrance courtyard which is decorated with benches and canopies.

For this award winning project Kingspan Thermawall TW50 Insulation was used as a partial fill cavity wall insulation. Thermawall TW50 is a high performance rigid polyisocyanurate insulation with a thermal conductivity of 0.022W/m.K. Complete with low emissivity foil facings which significantly increase the thermal resistance of the residual cavity to maximum thermal performance.

Kingspan Thermafloor TF70 Insulation was used within the floor construction of the Model School Inchicore. Thermafloor TF70 is also a high performance rigid polyisocyanurate insulation with a thermal conductivity of 0.022W/m.K and a compressive strength of 140kPA at 10% compression when tested to BS / I.S. EN 826: 1996. Thermafloor TF70 Insulation can be used as a solution below screed in block and beam floors or concrete slab floors, or below slab or within suspended timber floor applications. Thermafloor TF70 is an ideal insulation for use with underfloor heating and for both new build and refurbishment.

Thermafloor TF70 and Thermawall TW50 Insulation are both non–fibrous, easy to handle and safe to install. TF70 and TW50 both resist moisture penetration due to their closed cell structure, are unaffected by air infiltration and when installed correctly will have an indefinite life.
