The site for the new school was steeped over a number of levels which required a number of reinforced concrete walls to be incorporated into the buildings structure. Alongside the school building, which is capable of facilitating up to 750 post primary students, the project also included the construction of a full sized floodlit all-weather sports pitch within the schools grounds. The new school consists of 18 general classrooms and 2 lecture halls along with many other facilitates including a dedicated music area, a dress design room and a library.
A number of Kingspan Insulation products were used throughout this project.
Kingspan Thermawall TW50 Partial Fill Cavity Wall Insulation 60mm was used over a 3341m² area of this project. The boards have a thermal conductivity of 0.022 W/m.K. Each board is faced on both sides with a low emissivity composite foil which is highly resistant to the transmission of water vapour. This reflective, low emissivity surface effectively doubles the thermal resistance of the cavity.
729m² of Kingspan Styrozone N300R 120mm was also used. Kingspan Styrozone has a high compressive strength of 300kpa at 10% compression. The board is highly resistant to water absorption, resistant to the passage of water vapour and is unaffected by repeated freeze/thaw cycles.
Aerofloor Platinum HD(High Density) 30mm was used in the floor of the building. Kingspan Aerofloor Platinum is a rigid high performance insulation board. This lightweight, closed cell product has excellent thermal insulation properties and can be laid in damp conditions without compromising its performance or longevity.
Kingspan Thermafloor TF70 40mm was used in the floor of the building. When tested to BS / I.S. EN 826: 1996 Thermafloor TF70 has a compressive strength typically exceeding 140 kPa at 10% compression. Faced on both sides with a low emissivity composite foil, when correctly installed TF70 will last the life of the building.
Kingspan Kooltherm Cavity Closer is PVC–U extrusion with a fibre free rigid thermoset insulation core and has thermal conductivities of 0.025 W/m.K. Kooltherm Cavity Closer is ideal for use with timber, metal or PVC window frames and is designed specifically to reduce the labour and time involved in installing individual sections, making it the ideal solution for any project. 288lm Kooltherm Cavity Closer 125mm were used throughout this project.
A large quantity of Kingspan Kooltherm K15 Rainscreen Board 80mm was used in this project. Kingspan K15 is a premium performance rigid phenolic insulation board, designed for use behind rainscreen cladding systems and was the perfect solution for this project. This product addresses the stringent safety requirements of a public building with a Class O / Low Risk fire rating and negligible smoke obscuration. The product is also unaffected by air infiltration and achieves a thermal conductivity as low as 0.020 W/m.K.
This €7.9 million project was designed by McCarthy O'Hora Architects and the main contractor on the impressive structure was Sammon Contracting Ireland Ltd.
