The Lynn Building at Queens University Belfast was built between 1866 to 1868. The grade B-listed building built by W.H Lynn is a great example of Ruskinian Victorian Gothic Style architecture.
The project was commissioned by Queen’s University, with the focus on the conversion and restoration of the Lynn Building and the creation of a new graduate school for teaching, group study, training rooms, accommodation for administrative support and social spaces.
Emphasis was placed on recovering character of the interior of the building which had been subdivided by the insertion of a mezzanine floor in 1952 and an extension in the 1970’s.
Architects Consarc Conservation in Belfast worked closely with the main contractor Woodvale Construction Company to bring life back to this wonderful building which has been vacant since 2004.
The building now offers a reception and administrative support space on the ground floor as well as training facilities, meeting rooms and social space. The first floor is double height with an open plan centre making excellent use of the feature masonry gothic arches. This creates an impressive internal space with a study room in one area as well as a large social space.
At Kingspan we were delighted to work with Architecture Consarc to provide a number of insulation solutions to create a more energy efficient structure. Our Kingspan insulation technical team where able to provide detailed u value calculations and condensation risk analysis for many of the details and provide advice and guidance on minimising cold bridging at various junctions.
Kooltherm K7 warm pitched roof board was used on the project. Kooltherm K7 insulation is perfect for use in tiled on slated roofs. This board has a thermal conductivity as low as 0.020 w/m.k. The K7 is also easy to handle on site and quick to install, it is ideal for both new build and refurbishment, and is unaffected by air infiltration which can be a problem with other insulation types losing their thermal performance over time.
Also used on the project was our Therma TF70 for solid concrete and suspended ground floors. This board has a thermal conductivity as low as 0.022 w/m.k, and a compressive strength of 140 kPa at 10% compression, which allows greater floor loads to be considered for domestic and light commercial applications.
