1: What is your coldstore application?

Clean Room
With any food processing, chilled or cold storage facility, ensuring high levels of hygiene is paramount. At Kingspan, our coldstore UltraTemp panels are engineered with an innovative joint system designed to withstand intensive cleaning, preventing water ingress and minimising potential bacteria growth. So what kind of storage do you need?

What is your coldstore application?

They are generally split up into three different applications: food processing, chilled storage or cold storage. Here is more information about all of these:

Food processing

Food processing cold store
Food processing, by definition, is a temperature-controlled and hygiene-safe environment used for the preparation, production and processing of food with a temperature range of +10ºC to +18ºC.

The principle legislations dealing with the design and construction of food premises are the Food Safety Act 1990, Food Hygiene Regulations 2006 and Good Manufacturing Practice. The regulations contain specific requirements for the design and construction of premises where open food is stored or prepared.

All food premises should consider the following main criteria:
  • Prevent the formation of condensation and mould growth
  • Surfaces must have a smooth, impervious, non-absorbent, non-toxic and durable finish
  • Surfaces must be capable of being repeatedly cleaned and disinfected without deterioration and shredding of particles
  • All junctions between walls and floors, walls and ceilings and vertical wall angles should be finished to prevent the accumulation of dirt (the use of suitable coving being recommended)
  • All joint gaps to be sealed, to prevent the growth of disease producing bacteria.

Chilled Storage

Chilled food coldstore
Chilled storage, by definition, is a temperature-controlled environment used for the short-term storage of perishable products held at temperatures of 0ºC to +5ºC to maintain their quality and safety.

Schedule 4 (Temperature Control Requirements) of the 2006 Food Hygiene Regulations requires that in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, foods which are likely to support the growth of pathogenic micro-organisms or the formulation of toxins, be held at 0ºC to +5ºC unless specific products require different temperatures.

Chilled areas are also used to remove heat from products, to reduce the load on refrigeration systems.
Examples of the various food types include:
  • Dairy products: milk, ripened, soft or semi-hard cheeses, dairy-based desserts, mousses and products containing whipped cream
  • Cooked products: meat, fish, eggs, milk, cereals and vegetables
  • Smoked or cured ready-to-eat meat or fish: sliced hams, salamis and bacon
  • Prepared ready-to-eat foods: vegetables, salads and fruit salads
  • Uncooked or partly-cooked pastry or dough products: pizzas, sausage rolls and fresh pasta
  • Raw materials (meat), ingredients, intermediate products and finished products.

Cold Storage

Clean Room
Cold storage, by definition, is a temperature-controlled environment held between -40ºC and 0ºC, used for the preservation and long-term storage of perishable products to maintain their quality and nutritional value.

Many of today's perishable products are quick frozen (ultra rapid freezing to very low temperatures of -30ºC to -40ºC) and then stored at -18ºC (unless specific products require different temperatures).

Examples of various air-based coldstore environments include:
  • Blast freezers
  • Carton/box freezers
  • Tunnel freezers
  • Fluidised (individual quick freezing)
  • Spiral freezers
  • Deep freezers

Kingspan UltraTemp is a range of insulated roof, wall and ceiling panels designed specifically for use in the food and drink industry, in applications such as food manufacturing and temperature controlled storage.

2: What coating do I need?

The steel that makes up the face of the panel is pre-coated and there are different grades available. The cleaning regime within the cleanroom often has a deciding factor on this item – if you knew that an intensive programme such as vaporized hydrogen peroxide (VHP) was going to take place, you would need to make sure the coating would withstand the process.

We can offer advice on this. Take a look at the table below for the coatings that are available from us, across our UltraTemp range.

External Weather Sheet Coatings

Kingspan XL Forté Consists of a multi-layer organic coating, embossed with a traditional leather-grain finish.
Kingspan Spectrum Consists of a coated semi-gloss finish with slight granular effect.

Internal Sheet Coatings

CLEANsafe 15 Consists of a multi-layer organic coating, embossed with a traditional leather-grain finish.
CLEANsafe 25 Consists of a coated semi-gloss finish with slight granular effect.

CLEANsafe 55 The coating has been developed for use as the internal lining of insulated panels in humid and aggressive internal environments.
CLEANsafe 120 The coating has been developed for use as the internal lining of insulated panels where a high level of cleanliness and hygiene is required, and the panels are to be cleaned on a regular basis
CLEANsafe 316 The stainless steel liner has been developed for use as the internal lining of insulated panels in buildings with a very aggressive/corrosive internal environment.
Kingspan AQUAsafe The coating has been developed for use as the internal lining of insulated panels to suit high humidity internal environments
Kingspan AQUAsafe 55 The coating has been developed for use as the internal lining of insulated panels to swimming pool internal environments.
