1: Domestic Home or Commercial?

Ceiling insulation

Home and Domestic Projects

One of your key considerations when you’re self-building or renovating a home, is the ceiling/roof level insulation – and this is where Kingspan can help you.

There are two types of insulation that you may need:
  • Ceiling level insulation
If the attic is not used as a living area then it should be insulated at ceiling level (i.e., on the flat) as it would wasteful to keep the attic heated. By insulating the attic at ceiling level, it will prevent the heat rising to the unused attic space, saving you money on your heating bills.
  • Sloped roof insulation
If you use your attic as a living space then this area should be insulated at the rafters (i.e., the sloped roof).

If you are installing ceiling insulation in your own property, you can read more about the issues to consider and find installation instructions in the product brochures, and a link to our stockists here.

If you are building your own home - go here for help, advice and product support.

Commercial Projects

Ceiling-level insulation as described above also applies to commercial properties, from offices to schools and retail buildings.  Our Kooltherm range has a set of products specifically designed for Ceilings, which you can see towards the bottom of this page in the Insulation Boards product area.

2: Suspended or Structural Ceilings

Structural or Suspended Ceilings
For data centres, clean rooms and cold storage environments a structural or suspended ceiling may be required.

The advantages of these ceilings are:

  • Large heavy items can be suspended within a building
  • A structural grid would support infrastructure such as power modules, cable trays, partitions and other accessories.
  • The support and technology system can be designed and specified in advance and then quickly installed and covered by a suspended ceiling.
  • Suspended ceilings enhance cleaning and hygiene requirements
  • Allow for flush integration of fittings (lighting, air housings etc)

3: Design and Build Considerations

Insulating at ceiling level – considerations:

When insulating at ceiling level in a pitched roof with loft insulation between and over joists, it is vital to ensure the continuity of insulation at the specified R−value right to the eaves. This can be difficult because of the angle of pitch of the roof and the position of the rafters can prevent the insulation laid over the joists from being fitted all the way to the eaves.
  • Mansard roofs/walls
  • Fire stops
  • Lightning protection
  • Over rafter insulation.

Insulation at rafter level – considerations:

  • Position of insulation
  • Ventilation consideration
  • Breathable sarking membrane.
  • Unventilated and ventilated constructions.  There is generally a choice between unventilated and ventilated constructions, except in the case of refurbishment / loft conversions. In these instances, unless the whole roof is to be stripped or unless there is a breathable sarking membrane already in situ, it is impossible to use an unventilated roof, because a breathable sarking membrane cannot be installed.
