Friars Walk is a partially covered shopping centre and leisure complex in the city centre of Newport, South Wales. The centre has over 36,000 square metres of retail and leisure space including a department store, cinema, shops, restaurants, car park and bus station. It is linked by the redeveloped John Frost Square to the Kingsway Shopping Centre, Newport Museum, Art Gallery and Central Library.

The development released a new breath of life into the city and the increased footfall is benefiting all local businesses. Kingspan Architectural Façade Systems were used to create the desired design of this landmark meeting point.

The architect’s design philosophy was to create a series of buildings each with their own individual character, using a colour palette that was representative of the local surroundings. Kingspan façades in shades of green reflect the surrounding hills, and the terracotta hues are reminiscent of some of the older buildings in Newport city centre. All the while meeting stringent demands for design, rapid build and superior energy performance to ultimately achieve a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating.

A number of bespoke façade ancillaries were used to ensure maximum design flexibility in this project including; vertical rails for the hook-on cassettes, factory-cranked corner cassettes to give a smoother look, flashings made to match the thickness of the cassettes at strategic reveal points and a penetrating steel fixing solution for store signage.
