Scotland First: Why Dundee’s new V+A redefines energy efficiency

The Victoria & Albert Museum of Design Dundee, the only V&A museum located outside of London is set to open this September 15. Now, for the first time and in one place, V&A Dundee will explore Scotland's design heritage, blending architectural expression with energy conscious design.  

Sitting on the banks of the River Tay, the angular form of V&A Dundee demands attention. The £80.1 million museum was designed by Japanese architect Kengo Kuma and will feature a dramatic, curved exterior that mimics the sides of a ship, drawing inspiration from the dramatic cliffs of East Scotland. 

The building, rated BREEAM ‘Excellent’, sees renewables meet a highly insulated construction.  As part of the project’s commitment to achieve a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ Rating, care was taken to ensure the materials specified met the highest standards in responsible sourcing. All three Kingspan Insulation products installed at the museum have been assigned the highest possible BRE Green Guide Summary Rating of A+.

Air source heat pumps in combination with geothermal energy from 30, 200-metre deep bore holes’ heat and cool the building. The museum’s expansive flat roof was not only a potentially significant source of heat loss, but also required careful drainage management to prevent long-term maintenance issues.

To overcome this issue, over 6,500 m2 of Kingspan Thermataper TT46 LPC/FM was specified. Technical Manager for Kingspan Insulation in Great Britain, Matthew Evans, believes that this product improves the performance of the building. 
The product, installed under a roof membrane, provides excellent thermal performance and the required structural fall within a single, lightweight board. Its use, in combination with a further 1,000 m2 of Kingspan Thermaroof TR26 LPC/FM, allows for fast-track installation across the museum roof.
 
Kingspan’s tapered roofing design team created the detailed layout and specification for the final roof insulation scheme. Evans says that the teams layout plans provided a simple reference guide for Q9 Cladding Solutions. 

 
It ensures rainwater is effectively channelled off the flat roof. Careful U-value calculations were also completed to ensure the design U-value was met with the slimmest possible insulation thicknesses, minimising the weight of the final construction.
 
To insulate the ground floor throughout the building a further 5,300 m2 of Kingspan Kooltherm K3 Floorboard was installed. V&A Dundee director, Philip Long, says...
