Fire Safety Master’s to raise international standards

8 June 2017 Kingspan Group

Kingspan is to sponsor a master’s degree on fire safety engineering which will be run jointly through Ghent University in Belgium, Lund University in Sweden and The University of Edinburgh in the UK.

The aim of the sponsorship is to fund scholarships to make this Master qualification available to the highest calibre students, regardless of their background or financial circumstances.

The International Master of Science in Fire Safety Engineering (IMFSE) is a two year full time programme. The course is set up under the European Commission’s Erasmus+ framework which promotes international collaboration and allows the development of talent and innovation through higher education.

Roy Weghorst, Head of Regulatory Affairs – Fire at Kingspan explained why the company was getting involved: “Safety innovation, and increasing standards are two essential elements of the buildings of the future. That’s why we’re delighted to take the lead and support this programme.

“Developing dynamic research methods, and new tests into the real-life fire performance of buildings is essential. We believe that the professional discipline of fire safety engineering can lead this work, and will play an increasingly important role in building into the future.  We want to make sure the best people have the best training to help make that happen,” added Weghorst.

Weghorst also believes the existence of the programme will drive fire standards higher. “As part of the qualification students can also perform thesis research at three associated partner universities in Australia, Switzerland and the USA. The international partnership is a crucial aspect of the training, as it exposes the students to a broad range of issues, regulatory requirements and different approaches to solving problems.”
