Businesses have always been thinking of ways to increase efficiency, productivity and boost the wellbeing of their employees.

An empowering office space plays a huge part in this. Technology and innovation are creating high performance workplaces.

Kingspan looks into its crystal ball and predicts the future of office buildings.

Biophilic design

Greenery and natural light are the two main ingredients in biophilic design. The idea is to put workers in touch with nature, to reduce stress and open creative thought patterns. It allows for a more natural connection between worker and environment.

Driven by data

The workplace of the future will rely on data to make all big decisions, including how staff work. “In the future, we expect to see the rise of the intelligent workplace that monitors its workers’ environment, mood, wants and needs to create an all-encompassing, intelligent and unobtrusive working environment,” says Euan Davis of the Centre for the Future of Work at Cognizant.

Overall healthier buildings

Smart lighting, heating, and even sensors that measure how many people are in an office, are becoming commonplace.

Such technology plays a vital role in making buildings work more efficiently, but energy-efficient buildings can offer employee benefits too.

Theo Maessen, a senior partner at Dutch-based building design firm BOB says, "We are building healthier offices that use more daylight, have systems that maintain a constant temperature that eliminates mould and dust, and therefore reduces the rate of illness among employees."

Step outside, into your office

With Wi-Fi becoming increasingly available around the planet, offices are becoming wherever the worker is. People are working from home, from café’s, or even from beaches on the other side of the world. Who knows, maybe further on down the line, the world will be your office.

An office for all

Companies strive to boost employee communications and collaboration, but what about collaboration between firms?  As demand for office space increases, trends are emerging. Companies are coming together and working from the same space. This means that one building or even one floor could have multiple needs and requirements.
