Lithium Forklifts Raise Kingspan Insulation Site Towards Energy Target

10 November 2021 Kingspan Insulation

Kingspan Insulation has added 14 new lithium forklift trucks to its fleet at its facility in Selby, North Yorkshire, moving the site closer to its goal to be 100% powered by self-generated renewable electricity by 2025.

The new forklifts replace LPG fuel units and are expected to reduce the site’s use of fossil fuels by 6.8%. They also offer clear advantages over traditional lead-acid battery alternatives.

It’s all part of Kingspan’s Planet Passionate sustainability programme which sets 12 ambitious targets to be achieved across all of its global sites over the next decade. These include having zero company waste to landfill, meeting 20% of energy demand via on-site renewables and becoming a net zero carbon manufacturer, all by 2030.

Work at the Selby site has already seen the installation of a 15,000 m2 photovoltaic array on the roof and the commissioning of the state-of-the-art Kingspan GreenGuard production line which has a 100% reclaimable polystyrene waste stream, minimising the environmental impact of manufacturing processes. Details are also being finalised on a new 21 MW Combined Heat and Power (CHP) Plant which will convert waste into energy which will provide the site with all its electricity and heat requirements and more.

Kingspan Insulation UK & Ireland Managing Director, Ralph Mannion, was on hand at the delivery of the forklifts:

“The arrival of these new lithium forklifts marks another exciting step in our Planet Passionate journey. The trucks will help to cut our use of fossil fuels and place our Selby operation well on course to be powered entirely by self-generated renewable electricity by 2025.

The outstanding advances here at Selby, and across our sites in the UK and Ireland, are made possible through the passion and commitment of staff at all levels within our business and they can take real pride in what we’re achieving.”
