A future facing showcase for innovation with sustainability at its heart

21 June 2022 Kingspan Group

Niall Smith Architects and their design team has delivered us a building to the highest standards of sustainable design and construction and is a showcase for Kingspan products and systems.

David Watters, R&D Facilities, and Test Manager – Kingspan IKON

The brief for the redevelopment of the existing Kingspan Innovation Centre was simplicity itself – create the most, sustainable, futuristic building possible that achieves LEED Gold accreditation, and can be a showcase to demonstrate Kingspan products. This took some innovative design thinking to meet the complex programme and incorporate the wide variety of spaces required, from pilot manufacturing processes, to test laboratories to conference facilities. All this on a sloping site from two storeys at the entrance to four at the rear.
The entire design process was realised in 3D, which led to the development of a ‘digital twin’ of the building that can be experienced in its own dedicated space. Every aspect of the building performance can be monitored in a tour de force of impressive, connected technology demonstrating the future of construction and turbo charged post-occupancy evaluation. The new spaces combine with the existing to create a narrative of not only the Kingspan business in Kingscourt, but of the building itself.

Every aspect of the design needed to be carefully considered to create a radical approach to usage of innovative Kingspan products – both materials and services, from framing, roof, walls, right down to the underground Klargester rainwater harvesting system.

Nothing is wasted, we harvest light, heat, and rainwater. The latter is used extensively in irrigation of the landscape and cleaning.

Mike Stenson, Head of Innovation, Kingspan Group
This deceptively complex building is the high watermark of what is possible for the future of construction, an example of what can be achieved by a dedicated research and development team pushing the boundaries of advanced material science to ensure circularity. Completed in just 15 months, it is the demonstrable result of collaborative effort throughout the organisation, coupled with the imagination of its designers and contractors leaving no stone unturned in the pursuit of excellence. The overall design, layout and structure of the building and space therein allow for a particular team-based focus on the key innovation challenges around decarbonisation and circularity.
The layout and spaces have given us huge flexibility not only for innovation and research events, but events, conferencing, and offices with stunning views of the countryside – the home of Kingspan.
