World Oceans Day - Oceans are the lungs of our planet

10 June 2019 Kingspan Group

World Oceans Day is celebrated on Saturday 8th June to highlight the impact of human action, and inaction, on the oceans. Oceans play a vital role in the earth’s biosphere.  Our rainwater, drinking water, weather, climate, coastlines, and even the oxygen in the air we breathe, are all ultimately provided and regulated by the sea.
Oceans can absorb 30 per cent of carbon dioxide produced by humans which helps reduce the impact of global warming.
Currently more than 8 million tonnes of plastic are leaked into the world’s oceans every year. As much as 40 per cent of the world oceans are heavily affected by human activities, including depleted fisheries, loss of coastal habitats and pollution.
At present the rate of plastic recycling is still low. As a society we need to do more to protect our natural environment and ensure that plastic is reused and recycled as we move towards a circular economy.
With operations in over 100 locations and over 13,000 employees across the globe, Kingspan is well placed to take a lead on sustainability issues in the construction sector.
Earlier this year we made a commitment to recycle 500m plastic bottles each year by 2023 for use in our high performance, energy-saving insulation, with a further target of 1bn bottles each year by 2025. This complements Kingspan’s previous sustainability initiatives, including its commitment to operate as a Net Zero Energy (NZE) business by 2020.
Kingspan have also become a project partner with the EcoAlf Foundation, an initiative that will remove up to 150 tonnes of waste from the Mediterranean each year through the Foundation’s network of fishermen. Our 3-year funding will help EcoAlf expand their project and invest in research into the various sources of marine waste and appropriate ways to recycle the waste.
Excess PET plastic bottles and plastic materials retrieved will be used at our manufacturing facility in Castellbisbal near Barcelona to produce the raw materials for Kingspan insulation products that will be used by customers in low carbon buildings.
