RE100 recognises Kingspan Net Zero Energy achievements

24 January 2018 Kingspan Group
A growing group of multinational companies are reshaping the energy market through conscious global investment decisions and accelerating a zero emissions economy.
Led by the The Climate Group in partnership with CDP, RE100 is an initiative that unites some of the most global influential businesses that are committed to 100% renewable electricity.
Member companies of RE100 are strongly encouraged to set a goal to source 100% of their global electricity consumption from renewable sources, with Kingspan having achieved 89% renewable electricity in 2017.

Looking beyond just electricity consumption and examining Kingspan Group's estate as a whole, Kingspan pledged to be a net zero energy company by 2020. Kingspan Group set an interim target of 50% renewable energy in 2016. By the end of the same year, 57% of Kingspan Group’s energy usage came from renewable sources.
Each company discloses their electricity data annually, and RE100 reports on their progress.
RE100 Progress and Insight Report “Approaching a tipping point: how corporate users are redefining global electricity markets” has been released this week.
Kingspan Group have been mentioned in the highlights of the report having far exceeded their 2016 interim results. The updated 2017 figures for net zero energy will be released in the Kingspan annual report, which is set to be released at the end of Feburary.
Kingspan Group CEO Gene Murtagh commented:

At Kingspan we always seek to be a thought-leader in the sectors in which we operate so it became clear to us that we needed to take action to fully understand the energy footprint across our estate and to address carbon emissions from our own facilities.

The result was an ambitious commitment to make our estate net zero energy by 2020 – requiring 100% renewable electricity. We also decided to set a challenging interim target of achieving 50% renewable energy by 2016. To facilitate management of achieving the target we set up a process to capture energy use and carbon emissions on a monthly basis at every site across the Group.

Kingspan Group recognise the significance of climate change to global society and the importance of addressing the built environment as part of efforts to lower greenhouse gas emissions. Kingspan are committed to providing solutions for their customers as well as addressing their own facilities.

Murtagh outlines the benefits of RE100:

By joining initiatives like RE100 we hope to share our knowledge to help accelerate the transition to a low carbon economy. Together we have the opportunity to make our built environments more energy efficient, adaptable, environmentally sensitive and productive. We can make our buildings really work for us; consuming and generating energy smartly to become real investments in our future.
