Crafting culture in the community: Kingspan and the award winning Bunjil Place

Bunjil Place, featuring an intricate roof façade system by Kingspan, has been awarded Architecture of the Year at the International Design Awards, one of the largest creative awards body in the world. The impressive building also picked up Gold commendations for two architecture categories, Institutional and Landmarks.
 
At a cost of $125 million, Bunjil Place is a multipurpose arts, civic and community facility which holds a public library, a theatre, meeting spaces, council offices and an art gallery. It was constructed in late 2017 under the architectural guidance of Francis-Jones Morehen Thorp. The entire multiplex spans an impressive 24,500m² and is idyllically situated in Narre Warren, 25km from Melbourne’s city centre.

Bunjil Place is a one-of-a-kind facility aiming to bring together the community in a fresh and vibrant manner. The unique curvature of the building is a stunning representation of contemporary architecture. Due to the complex geometrical shape of the building, Kingspan’s KingZip Linea was a perfect fit for Bunjil Place. This roof system can be tapered into convex shapes with ease, making it easy to form the conical and curved shapes required for the build.
 
Speaking about the project, Niall Horgan, General Manager of this business in Australia explained the process behind Kingspan’s involvement:
We worked with FJMT (Francis Jones Morehen Thorp architects) on the design to ensure we could deliver something that would work in practice.
 
KingZip Linea can achieve building shapes and geometries that no other products in the market can and there were a lot of technicalities to work through – such as the many junctions and sheet profile types. We ultimately issued a set of construction ‘shop’ drawings for approval by the client.
 
Niall went on to explain how Kingspan’s involvement in the early stages of design helped to safeguard from any possible hiccups throughout the construction phase.
 
The fact that we were involved in the project from the very beginning enabled us to overcome any potential design challenges early on. The installation itself went really smoothly.
