"Kingspan has allowed me to immerse myself in many new cultures and build personal relationships that will last a lifetime."
Prior to coming to Kingspan I was a practising architect, from there I co-founded a software start up business, and Kingspan became a customer. I never saw myself working for a big corporation, but the more I learned about Kingspan the more I found the culture interesting, and when the space opened up for my current role in 2016, I went for the interview. I have always had a passion for sustainability and education, and the position was essentially created based on my skillset and background. Before I started, I didn’t understand the sheer size of the Kingspan Group, but what I enjoy is that, despite its size, the business still has the passion and energy of a start up.
There is no typical day! That’s part of the joy of the role – every day is different, which keeps me on my toes. One minute I might be communicating with the commercial team on a project level, or checking in with the marketing team, the next I might need to focus at a strategic level on how to implement our next sustainability targets. This role doesn’t formally exist elsewhere in the business, so I sometimes have the privilege of supporting other divisions. The scale of my work in any one day ranges from the granular to ten thousand feet!
Within the last month we have been able to secure the single largest ever order in KIP USA on the back of our sustainability story. The order was leaning to a competitor, but I had an introduction to the client’s chief sustainability officer, which I followed up on, and with the support of our commercial team we were able to flip the whole project – not just based on Kingspan’s general approach as a business, but specifically because of the low embodied carbon of QuadCore. This example solidifies how we are driving business. It affirms the business case for why we do what we do – it’s good to know that you are doing the right thing and still turning a profit in the process.
That’s easy – it’s the history of what has already been achieved, the way that the culture is ingrained throughout, from the executives at the top to the workers on the factory floor. I hesitate to use the word innovation again, but it is the best description, together with a sense of stewardship and social equity that I believe lies at the core of our operations. The values of this business align fully with my own. Planet Passionate is the perfect example. These are aggressive targets - they will be very challenging to meet. But Kingspan is committed to them, and will deliver them no matter what, and then we’ll put out more targets for the next ten years, and then more after that.
