Klargester guide
to #2020 rules

Homeowners with septic tanks that discharge directly into surface water will need to replace or upgrade their drainage either when they sell their property or before 1 January 2020 whichever is sooner.
Homeowners are responsible for their choice, installation and maintenance of their wastewater system under a new code of practice introduced by the Environment Agency. They have a legal responsibility to minimise the impact of your sewage waste if they manage it within the bounds of your property e.g. with a septic tank or sewage treatment plant (Binding Rules - England, DEFRA, January 2015).

Trust the experts

Kingspan recommends installing a sewage treatment plant which treats the wastewater, producing a clear overflow that is environmentally friendly and suitable for discharging even on sensitive sites.
Despite their high efficiency rating, treatment plants don’t cost significantly more to buy and install than a septic tank and require a smaller drainage field while maintenance and running costs are relatively low.

How to follow the rules

Always get expert, specialist advice when it comes to sewage waste treatment - we can offer free site, no-obligation inspections. We offer free site visits to discuss project specific requirements and provide a detailed written report and specification to recommend the best water management solution for your project. We also provide on-site installation assistance when required and help you with formal discussions with Building Control, Local Planning departments, The Environment Agency/SEPA, architects and consultants.

New sewage treatment plants must be fit for purpose and comply with industry standard EN 12566. All our systems are tested and certified to European standard EN 12566. As a homeowner you can rest assured that your Klargester system will operate optimally at all times, saving you time, money and hassle.

Your system needs to be properly sized, installed, and maintained by an authorised person (i.e. a professionally qualified installer). Strategically placed around the UK, Kingspan accredited installers have been professionally trained by leading industry experts. With years of experience, our installers are well placed to provide first class installation and commissioning of your Klargester wastewater systems.

You are limited to discharging a maximum of 2,000 litres of treated sewage per day into the ground or 5,000 litres of treated sewage per day to flowing water. If you discharge more you will need a permit.

It’s important that your sewage treatment plant or septic tank system is emptied and maintained regularly to continue operating optimally. Poorly performing systems can cause serious health hazards as well as local pollution risks. Recent Building Regulations (Part H 2010 – BS EN 12566) state that regular emptying and maintenance of small sewage treatment plants must be undertaken by the homeowner at least once per year, or as per the manufacturer’s guidelines.
