In 1999 legislation was put in place to govern the emission levels from Non Road Mobile Machinery (NRMM) and this has been amended several times since. Emission levels of carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, nitrous oxides and particulate matter are all covered under this legislation. Some examples of NRMM would include:
- Garden equipment such as hedge trimmers and hand held chainsaws
- Construction machinery
- Industrial trucks
- Mobile cranes
There are two types engines used in Non Road Mobile Machinery; spark ignition (SI) and compression ignition (CI), and these are then classified according to the power of the engine.
In 2014, Stage 4 of the emissions standards regulations were introduced. This change saw the introduction a selective catalytic converter in all new off road machinery that uses AdBlue as a reducing agent to reduce the nitrous oxide emissions from diesel engines.
As with all SCR systems, it is extremely important that the quality of the AdBlue used is protected. Even the slightest contamination from dust and dirt, fuel or oil etc can do enough damage to require extensive repairs to, and often the full replacement of an SCR system within your vehicle.
