St David's Hospice

A specialist in-patient unit designed to support first class patient care within a welcoming and energy efficient setting.

The Project

St David’s Hospice Care has been providing specialist palliative care within Wales for almost 40 years. To further enhance their care offering within the region, the firm chose to open a new 15 bed in-patient unit providing state-of-the-art facilities for patients with complex symptom management needs, end of life care and occasional respite care.

Each room within the unit has been carefully designed and furnished to support the wellbeing and comfort of patients. Each has its own wetroom and private terraces, providing views of the newly planted wildflower meadow and hills beyond. Visitors are welcome at all time and great care has been taken to make the building a friendly and inviting place. An external stone wall (sourced from local quarry) weaves its way from outside the main entrance into the reception and cafe areas – helping to guide visitors into the building.

To create a welcoming environment which sits naturally within the surrounding landscaping, KKE Architects used a variety of natural materials including cedar shingles and tumbled sandstone. Equally as important as the external appearance was making the building energy efficient — helping to create a pleasant environment for patients whilst reducing energy costs for the hospice. 

KKE Architects employed a fabric first approach to achieve this, with the various building elements designed to achieve excellent U-value performance. To ensure a slim external wall construction whilst delivering the target U-value of 0.16 W/m²K, Kingspan Kooltherm K8 Cavity Board was specified within the cavity wall elements of the construction.
The Kingspan Insulation products delivered reliable performance, enabling us to achieve our desired design details. We were also able to contact their technical support team throughout the design process, ensuring the completed elements performed as expected

The unit also features a highly insulated floor and roof with both elements achieving a U-value of 0.10 W/m²·K. To deliver this, almost 3000 m² of Kingspan Kooltherm K3 Floorboard was fitted along with Kingspan Kooltherm K7 Pitched Roof Board and Thermaroof TR27 LPC/FM. This high specification design enabled it to attain an Energy Performance Certificate of A.
