St Catherine's CE Primary School

Kingspan Kooltherm Cavity Closer was installed as part of a £5 million primary school in Kidderminster.

The Project

The innovative, three winged design of St Catherine’s Primary School places the learning experience at its heart, with top class IT facilities, high ceilinged classrooms which maximise natural light, and group rooms which allow an entirely different approach to teaching.

Kingspan Kooltherm Cavity Closer was selected for the project by Worcestershire County Council’s Architects Department.

The product, installed by main contractors Kier Construction, is manufactured in thirteen sizes from 50 – 150 mm. This range allowed it to be specified to tightly fit the school’s 140 mm wall cavity in a single thickness. For especially large cavities, jointing clips can also be used to extend this range up to 300 mm. 

The project at St Catherine’s Primary School required a cavity wall insulation product that was going to fulfil the energy efficient performance credentials specified by Worcestershire County Council.

Energy efficiency was a priority for the school and Kingspan Kooltherm Cavity Closer formed a key part of this solution, contributing to the insulation envelope with a thermal conductivity of 0.022 W/m∙K and preventing thermal bridging around the windows and doors.
 
By eliminating thermal bridging at these openings, Kingspan Kooltherm Cavity Closer also helped the building meet requirement B3 of the Building Regulations for England and Wales regarding internal fire spread. Kingspan Kooltherm Cavity Closers up to 150mm have passed a one–hour UKAS accredited fire resistance test with PVC windows and can help to prevent fire and smoke from breaching the building’s compartmentation through the wall cavity.
 
Kingspan provided a cost effective solution which helps the building achieve improved energy performance complementing other energy efficient design features. Kier and Kingspan worked closely together to ensure a successful solution was delivered on time and to budget for the client.
