Thermo King

A Collaborative Solution for Thermo King

Thermo King pioneered transport temperature control in 1938 and has been world leader ever since. The Galway plant was opened in 1976 to manufacture transport temperature control solutions for a variety of mobile applications.

When planning to extend the Manufacturing Area, Thermo King proposed a new facility to house new manufacturing equipment. With productivity at the heart of the expansion, daylighting solutions were built into the design programme, helping to enhance performance across several areas of the business. In collaboration with Kingspan Insulated Panels, Kingspan Light + Air developed a robust solution to satisfy the requirements of the manufacturing facility in more ways than one.

Leading the way in transport temperature control for more than 80 years, today Thermo King products include systems for vans, trucks, trailers, buses, railway trucks, air, sea-going and intermodal containers. Thermo King is dedicated to providing its customers with innovative solutions through the use of smarter equipment and systems, Thermo King sought to expand its manufacturing area to allow introduction of new technologies. Committed to sustainability and offering results that help the business and its customers, it was essential that the Thermo King facility had sustainable solutions that would withstand the test of time.

Why Kingspan?

The building, designed with daylighting in mind, sought to provide occupants with a comfortable and healthy working environment. Working collaboratively with Kingspan Insulated Panels, the divisions designed a sophisticated solution that embraced daylighting in wall and roof situ.

Using a combination of daylighting in the roof and in the walls, the facility maximises the optimal light levels whilst maintaining a good thermal performance of the overall building. Implementing 135m2 of 40mm Day-Lite Klick wall panels and 1240m2 of 100mm insulated panel on the roof and 130m2 of DLTR rooflights, Kingspan Insulated Panels and Kingspan Light + Air helped to provide an ideal solution for embracing natural daylighting in a quick and seamless integration process.

As well as daylighting solutions, the Thermo King facility has benefited from additional energy saving benefits. With a limited solar heat gain and light transmission of up to 59%, the Day-Lite Klick has thermal performance benefits that will help to reduce reliance on energy, increasing the overall sustainability of the business.

Partnering with the divisions, Thermo King has benefited from having one trusted manufacturer, with warranties in place for structural, thermal and UV resistance performance for up to 25 years. When in design stage, the benefits of blending daylighting and thermal benefits into the architectural specification helped Thermo King to succeed in finding a compliant and sustainable solution to its specific requirements. Working collaboratively on the project, the Kingspan divisions were able to design the best integration of products to ensure occupants benefit from natural lighting and the building is sustainable and reliance on artificial lighting and energy is decreased.
