Introducing IKON - Kingspan’s new global innovation centre

19 November 2019 Kingspan Group
Today, Kingspan announces a new chapter in our company’s history. We have officially opened the doors to IKON, our new global innovation centre.
Since the beginning, Kingspan has been committed to innovation – something we demonstrate daily in the work we produce across our business. We believe we have to challenge building industry traditions through innovating in advanced materials and digital technologies to achieve a net zero emissions future. Kingspan’s products and systems therefore ensure higher lifetime energy and carbon savings.

About IKON

IKON is embedded in our future and represents our heritage. Based where it all began at our headquarters in Ireland, it is a physical manifestation of this continued commitment to innovation that has underpinned every phase of our growth. IKON will truly enable our business to continue to thrive in a changing world, while asking the big questions that will lead us all to a more sustainable, circular and healthy future.

Sustainable and digital performance

IKON has been built to the highest standards of sustainable design and is a showcase for high-performance envelope design using 18 Kingspan products and systems. The building itself is a living research project, containing multiple IoT devices. Containing state-of-the-art prototype manufacturing, analytical laboratory, mechanical design, customer solution centre and research facilities, IKON will be home to a team of people dedicated to research and development in advanced material science, working closely with innovation teams in our businesses across the world. Through technology partnerships, we are aiming to have the world’s first level 5 maturity digital twin.
It will also be home to our Digital Team, which is dedicated to the future positioning of digitalisation within Kingspan, with a key focus on improving the customer experience. This team is also leading research into how we should bring more intelligence into our product set, making them ready for Industry 4.0, IOT and a ‘Model First” approach to the built environment.

Looking towards the future

I strongly believe that the challenges of the future will not be solved by looking backwards. The solutions lie in advanced materials, new technologies, and a data-centric approach to digitalisation. This will transform the way we build and redefine building performance. But it can only be achieved through collaboration, and in cases such as circularity, by systemic change. To this end, we at IKON look forward to working in collaboration with universities, research institutions and industry partners, helping us pursue better building performances and greater value for all.
