Aperture is shaped by the balance between exposure and solitude. Framing nature as the focus of its living space, the design wraps the resident within to create privacy in dense emergency housing. The form and layout are fundamentally oriented by placing key views to the exterior within a direct line of sight from key interior moments. This view-focused layout, along with an opaque skin that peels away to further frame the apertures, seeks to find balance in the tension between openness and refuge. Energy for the home is generated via the PowerPanel roof assembly while the use of Solatube Tubular Skylights in the bathroom reduces the need for daytime lighting.

Home Park offers adaptive reuse for urban transformation, reimaging and repurposing stacked parking systems in New York City to transform existing steel frameworks into Modular Integrated Construction (MiC) housing units. Each MiC is a fully self-contained dwelling, capable of being deployed within the urban retrofit or in remote natural settings for flexible, off-grid living. The modules employ passive energy strategies and environmentally responsible materials. The aerodynamic form subtly references automotive design, while Kingspan facades in wood tones harmonise with both the city’s brick vernacular and the rural natural landscapes.

The introduction of London’s Ultra Low Emission Zone has accelerated a shift away from private car ownership, with vehicle registrations decoupling from population growth for the first time in the city’s history. As reliance on public transport and cycling increases, projections indicate a reduction of up to 250,000 cars by 2041. This transformation presents an opportunity to reimagine the city’s streetscape: could redundant on-street parking be repurposed to address the housing shortage? Kerb Home explores this potential through a series of affordable, environmentally conscious off-grid microhomes, each designed to occupy the footprint of three parked cars. By reclaiming overlooked urban space, the project proposes a compact, low-impact housing model that responds to changing patterns of mobility while contributing to a more sustainable and inclusive city.
