Cox Architecture spent a year designing the new QLD Country Bank Stadium with the central guiding principle being to create a sense of community. The $318 million stadium took two years to build and can seat 25,000 spectators for sports like rugby and soccer while other events, like concerts, can accommodate 40,000 guests.
Special consideration was given to the stadium’s roof because of North Queensland’s tropical weather conditions. Over 12,000 sqm2 of Kingspan WB6 Trapezoidal Sheet was specified for the soffit of the stadium. Due to the stringent cyclonic requirements that had to be met, and the fact that the sheets would be exposed to the harsh environment, cyclonic testing was undertaken at James Cook University. After meeting the requirements, the sheets were supplied in an extremely durable Durabond 60 paint finish on a 0.9mm aluminium substrate, and with a 30-year guarantee.
