Caulfield Grammar School Aquatic Centre

The new Caulfield Grammar School Aquatic and Wellbeing Centre is a visionary facility that showcases innovative advances in aquatic sports technology.

The Project

In 2019 Caulfield Grammar School in St Kilda East, Victoria extended its commitment to the health of students and the wider community, with the completion of an ambitious project to build a state-of-the-art aquatic and wellbeing centre.

The new Caulfield Grammar School Aquatic and Wellbeing Centre is a visionary facility that showcases innovative advances in aquatic sports technology. The $25 million project houses a 50m Olympic-size swimming pool with a moveable floor that can be raised and lowered to adjust the water depth to cater for different aquatic programs. In addition, an integrated moveable boom and pop-up pool wall allows for the versatility to arrange the pool for various configurations and uses.

KingZip Linea System on purlins
The striking building, designed by Peddle Thorp Architects, was created to interface with the adjacent Hepworth Centre and Lindsay Thompson Sports Centre. The new aquatic centre features leading environmentally sustainable design elements to reduce the carbon footprint of the building. This includes an advanced pool water treatment system to reduce water consumption, energy consumption and chemical treatments, high performance glazing and water efficient fittings.

Integral to the design and meeting the sustainability outcomes is the Kingspan KingZip standing seam aluminium roofing system. The KingZip system is customisable, making it the ideal solution for the curved roof design. KingZip afforded the design flexibility required in terms of complex curvature, finishes, colour and acoustics. Installed by Barden Steel Deck Industries, the Kingspan Insulated Panels roofing system encloses almost the entire building exterior.

KingZip was also highly suited to this project due to its non-corrosive properties, which ensures the humid pool environment will not affect the performance and integrity of the materials. The panels create a sealed and protected thermal and acoustic envelope, increasing the building’s ecological footprint, and achieving the sustainable design objectives.

The KingZip roof system was installed wrapped onto Kingspan Trapezoidal Roof panels (KS1000 RW). These panels present a superior system compared to conventional multi-part site assembled systems. They are quicker to install, require less manual labour and are designed to meet thermal building regulation compliance.
