Deciding to build your dream home is never an easy task, but multifunctional and high-performing building products can make it a little bit less daunting.
Pip Brett, the owner of online homewares haven Jumbled and her husband Nick Luelf, decided to embark on an adventure of building a home with sustainability at its core after stumbling upon an ideal piece of land in Orange, NSW.
The breathtaking modern Mediterranean home was designed by the award-winning Melbourne architects, Studio Esteta, to seamlessly fit into the surrounding landscape. To take advantage of natural light and the beautiful views, the house features large window surfaces, so making sure it achieved sufficient thermal performance became an imperative.
Luckily for the pair, Nick is a qualified builder and knows his stuff when it comes to choosing the right building materials. We chatted with him about the importance of insulation in building planning and his experience working with the Kingspan AIR-CELL products.
When embarking on building a new home, how much thought did you give to insulation?
"A lot! We spent endless hours researching a practical way to insulate the house effectively and efficiently and looked at so many different brands.
Orange has harsh winters with prolonged periods of cold weather and even snow during the winter months. Our summers also appear to be getting warmer and because our house is orientated to the western sun, we really needed to invest in an excellent insulation solution.
The Building Code of Australia (BCA) has also just updated the climatic zone in Orange to state that all new construction must have a breathable house wrap installed so we wanted a product that delivered maximum comfort with minimal energy input."
Why did you choose AIR-CELL?
"We were already required to wrap the house in a breathable wrap and I wanted to use a product that had good insulation properties (which many other products did not). There are foam insulation products on the market, but because they don't have the ability to allow vapour movement in and out, they weren't suitable for us.
AIR CELL was the perfect solution. It has fantastic insulation properties combined with minute perforations which allows for the movement of vapour whilst maintaining a waterproof barrier. It also eliminates the material and labour costs associated with installing two different products for the same result."
