During the recent Sustainable House Day on September 15th, residents of Adelaide were able to tour the construction site of South Australia’s first 10 Star house. This pioneering project is being undertaken by SUHO ESD consultants in partnership with different product manufacturers to demonstrate the benefits of high performing homes.

New homes built in most parts of Australia must achieve a minimum level to a 6 Star Standard when it comes to thermal performance. While 6 Star homes satisfy the base standards of new-builds, they can still be affected by extreme temperatures and require more investment in heating and cooling systems and associated bills.

By raising the building standards, it is possible to further optimise the living conditions. A house that is built to a 10 Star Standard has an improved building envelope that provides better energy efficiency and thermal comfort. In this way, the occupants can enjoy a comfortable living environment while spending less money on heating and cooling and improving their house’s environmental impact at the same time.

The Sagacious project is the first 10 Star rated house being built in South Australia. With the region’s extreme temperatures during the summer months, SA is the ideal testing ground for this environmentally friendly way of building. The project is aiming to showcase a more sustainable way of developing homes in Australia by using good design principles such as optimising house orientation, increasing insulation and installing double glazed windows.

To make sure the house is not just thermally, but also energy efficient, it will also feature solar panels and a solar water heater. The finished house will be monitored to test if it is able to maintain a comfortable temperature all year round without additional heating and cooling.

With its mission to shape the future of the built environment, Kingspan Insulation has embraced the opportunity to support the Sagacious project and has supplied its high performing insulation products for the build. The basis of a thermally efficient building is a strong building envelope so using high performing insulation in the house walls was a must.

Sagacious features both the rigid phenolic Kingspan Kooltherm K12 Framing board and flexible reflective AIR-CELL Permicav XV insulation within its walls. “Using high performing insulation such as Kingspan Kooltherm is a really easy way to boost your home’s energy efficiency and reap long term benefits of paying lower energy bills,” added Kingspan Insulation’s SA & NT State Manager, James Pinyon.
The built environment is responsible for a quarter of Australia's carbon emissions, while heat loss, a common occurrence in Australian homes, can increase your energy bills by 25%. With the world climate rapidly changing, growing the market for more sustainable homes is becoming a priority in Australia.
