With electricity prices on the rise and the topic of energy conservation at the peak of every builder’s mind, achieving a higher energy rating with the addition of a single, ‘one-fits-all’ insulation product is a simple and effective solution.
The National Construction Code requires all new dwellings, renovations and alterations in Victoria to comply with a minimum 6 Star Standard in its thermal performance. The 6 Star energy efficiency rating encompasses the entire building envelope, including roofs, walls, windows and floors.
A recent study conducted by Graham Energy shows Kingspan Kooltherm K3 Floorboard under slab insulation can help achieve a 6 Star Energy rating across different climate zones and most orientations without the need to change any other building specifications.
It was found that maximum traditional waffle pod construction (R0.9) reached the minimum regulatory compliance in only two of three climate zones tested. Whereas Kingspan Kooltherm K3 Floorboard 25 mm insulation (R1.2), managed to achieve compliance in all three scenarios.
“Our super high performance Kooltherm K3 closed cell phenolic insulation is the most advanced technology in its field, it requires less space and labour than traditional under-floor waffle pods.” commented National Specification Manager, Ross Baynham.
Even with significantly increased wall and ceiling insulation and building sealing levels, it resulted in neither the concrete slab on ground without insulation, nor the waffle pod construction, improving up to the same level.
“Assisting our customers to achieve the minimum 6 Star rating using a 25 mm board is quite an achievement. Our 30 mm, 40 mm and 50 mm board options can offer an even greater flexibility with dwelling orientations” continued Baynham.
