Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre (VCCC)

A peerless performer

The Project

The recent opening of the Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre, (VCCC), in Parkville Victoria heralds a new era in cancer treatment, research and education. The new home of the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, this landmark building houses world-leading cancer research, clinical services, and a variety of training and education facilities.

This massive 130,000 m2 building features 160 overnight inpatient cancer beds, a 42-bed intensive care unit, 110 same-day beds, and a dedicated clinical trials unit with 24 treatment places.

The VCCC also includes over 25,000 m2 of specialised research space, eight operating theatres, two procedure rooms, and eight radiation therapy bunkers.

To meet such a challenging design brief and demanding specifications, high-performance building materials were installed throughout. Three leading architectural firms were commissioned for the project and represented as STHDI+MCR, a partnership of Silver Thomas Hanley and DesignInc with McBride Charles Ryan. The project builder was Grocon PCL, a joint venture of two established international companies.

Kingspan’s Kooltherm K10 FM Soffit Board was installed on each of the four basement levels of the VCCC, and in 12 levels of ceiling throughout the building. This high-performance board’s slimline profile makes it an impressive space saver, which is ideally suited to these applications. Specifically designed to insulate concrete roofing and flooring, this phenolic insulation board provides an attractive and thermally efficient protective barrier. It’s as safe as it is practical, with a Group 1 BCA fire classification.

‘Careful consideration of all materials and their origin is more important than ever before,’ says Melina Thomas, Director and architect at STH. ‘Compliance and measurable performance are equally critical when considering all materials, and Kooltherm K10 FM Soffit Board's CodeMark Certification provided that assurance.’

Insulation Contractor Pat Moore from Arc, who installed Kooltherm K10 FM Soffit Boardthroughout the VCCC, had much to say about the product’s key role in the project’s success. ‘It met the performance specifications of this brief perfectly,’ says Pat. ‘It’s very fast to work with and readily available.’

One aspect that particularly impressed Pat was the ease and speed of installation. ‘Due to the user-friendly nature of the Kooltherm K10 FM Soffit Board, along with Kingspan’s supply and stockholding, our initial order size increased significantly,’ he says. ‘Working with Kooltherm proved to be a positive experience for all concerned.’

At the outset, the contractor was so enthusiastic about the initial use of Kooltherm K10 FM Soffit Board that he ordered more – a great deal more! The initial order of 7,000 m2 was increased to 17,000 m2 and with the continued speed and ease of installation, in excess of 35,000 m2 was eventually installed.

According to Pat, the project’s well-executed planning and tight organisation ensured its success. ‘Of all the hospitals that have been built in Australia in the last few years, this one opened right on schedule. Working with Kingspan was a very positive experience for us, and enabled us to move faster on the job.’

Fire safety is paramount in every building, but especially so in public health care facilities. As well as being ideally suited to environments where internal space is at a premium, Kooltherm K10 FM Soffit Board delivers exceptional fire performance. It’s FM approved to Class 1 fire rating (Class No. 4880), and has Group 1 BCA fire classification. The product has also undergone the rigours of fire collar performance testing, and is compliant to AS 1530.4.

Smoke emissions are also an important consideration, particularly in health facilities, where occupants’ mobility is often restricted.

Kooltherm K10 FM Soffit Board has been tested to substantially out-perform alternative rigid panel insulation products. Products such as PIR have been tested to release approximately 2.5 times more smoke than Kooltherm K10, delaying or possibly affecting a safe escape.
