Why reclad?

Australia’s current cladding crisis can be explained by a lack of building regulation and the widespread use of non-compliant building products such as aluminium composite panel (ACP) cladding with a high polyethylene (PE) core content, or insulated sandwich panels (ISP) with polystyrene (EPS) core, both highly flammable materials.

Many buildings across Australia use this type of cladding and there are now a multitude of cases where the use of dangerous ACP/ISP material has triggered claims for remediation by owners and body corporates. Insurance companies are also less willing to cover these type of projects due to the high risk involved [1]. The issue is so severe that state governments have gotten involved, with estimates that rectification works could cost well over $6.2 billion.

Recladding is necessary for non-compliant products to be removed and allow the building to be reclad in a material that complies with the National Construction Code and insurance industry requirements. Recladding also provides the opportunity to repair any damage, update the building's façade, or improve energy efficiency with minimal disruption to occupants.

Recladding Case Study: Aurora Apartments

Upon discovering the type of cladding used was non-compliant, the Aurora Owner’s Corporation was notified the buildings’ insurance premium would increase by 500 per cent. However, after installation of the Kingspan Evolution wall panel system, the Aurora Apartment Owner’s Corporation was advised that the insurance premium would be decreased by $140,000.
