Kingspan Serves an Ace at Wimbledon
01/07/2009
When the All England Lawn Tennis Club wanted to renovate the famous centre court at Wimbledon, the challenge was on to provide a venue befitting the world's premier tennis event. Designing and constructing a new high quality fixed roof was essential, and architects HOK Sport turned to Kingspan Insulated Panels to provide an efficient and striking solution.
With capacity increased to 15,000 spectators, a big consideration was ensuring the design maintained the iconic standards of the court, which was originally built in 1922. The versatile Kingspan KS500 ZIP Kingzip Standing Seam system with a Stucco embossed Mill finish was the perfect choice, as Dale Jennins of HOK Sport explains:
“We needed a standing seam system to fit in with the existing aesthetic of the courts, and wanted to use composite panels to avoid the time demands of fixing extra acoustic insulation. Kingzip proved to be the ideal product.”
Kingzip is the only composite panel standing seam system, with greater installation efficiency over built-up alternatives. Versatility is offered by the availability of both 500mm and 1000mm cover widths, with the 500mm option used for more than 70 different roof parts on centre court.
With such a variety of segments, main contractor Galliford Try and roofing contractor J&P Roofing Contracts faced a strict timescale to have everything completed for the 2008 championships. David Gulliver at J&P Roofing Contracts comments:
“Kingspan's envirocare Technical Services team were involved early on in the design stage, and advised how using an offsite method for sizing and shaping the panel segments would help to produce the design within a fast turnaround time. A Kingspan Field Services Engineer also made regular visits to the site to ensure that the installation ran smoothly without any problems.”
Kingzip is available in many finishes, including aluminium stucco, the XL Forte range of pre-painted colours and Kingspan Façade FX, meaning that a selection of different façade finishes can be applied, including an aged or natural copper effect. The majority of Kingspan products have an ECOsafe insulation core, containing no CFCs or HCFCs with a low Global Warming Potential, achieve an ”A” or “A+” rating according to the Green Guide to Specification and are available in FIREsafe LPCB insurer-approved form for assured fire performance. They are also fibre-free, removing the risk of loose fibres being released and causing irritation.
